It’s been a HUGE MONTH for the campaign.

We welcomed three new members.

We are so proud that Community Employers WA (CEWA), Pilbara Community Legal Services and Regional Alliance West have joined our alliance. Welcome to our new members.

We’ve been busy meeting with MPs.

This month we’ve met with Minister Ellery and also met with MPs in parliament to discuss the reforms and the rental stress in their electorate.

We’ve had huge media coverage!

It’s been great to be landing impactful high-profile stories in print and on TV, and we are struggling to keep up with media enquiries! Highlights this month include:

  • WAtoday ran our story using results from our Renters Survey on the fear of no reason evictions leaving them too scared to assert their rights to repairs and maintenance, read more here.
  • Sunday Times ran a double page spread showing WA is falling behind other states and territories who have made changes to make renting more secure, with tenants living in A Constant Fear Of Eviction
  • Channel 7 ran an exclusive story using data from our Renters Survey on the proposal to limit rent increases to once a year – featuring landlords in support : )

And last but not least – Landlords are coming out in support of our campaign!

A huge breakthrough this month is that we’ve secured the support of outspoken landlords who are are behind the reforms. Watch this space as they take on the scare campaign being waged by the real estate lobby – who for reasons we cannot understand continue to argue that property managers should be allowed to evict families without any reason, and that if renters are allowed to put a picture on the wall the earth will spiral into the sun.

As always, get in touch if you’d like to join the alliance, have a story to share, or resources to contribute to this once-in-a-generation opporutnity to change the laws and Make Renting Fair.

For the 700,000 of us,

Chantal @ makerentingfair@shelterwa.org.au
